In a recent report by the Surgeon General, Donna E. Shalala, U.S. Health and Human Services secretary, says "Oral health is integral to overall health," and also a key determinant of your nutritional status and your self-esteem. The report also states that infections in the mouth open a floodgate to disease-causing bacteria to enter the bloodstream and in turn rouse a number of diseases including:

Heart disease and stroke
Respiratory infection
Diabetes
Stomach ulcers
Low birthweight or premature births

Access to dental care, including basic brushing and flossing, sealants and regular visits to the dentist every six months, is much less expensive than having to pay to fix cavities, fillings or a root canal.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, many sight-threatening diseases, if detected early, can be cured or treated to prevent, or slow, the progression of any vision loss. The University of Maryland Medical Center states, "The most important preventive step is receiving routine examinations by a qualified eye care professional."
